Pie Day or PI Day?

Hello mathematicians! OK, so I'm not one of them and I did not realise that there was an official PI day! Sad, eh?

Here's the evidence: 3.14159

Wellington CBD

Here is a picture of the Wellington CBD area, taken from an aircraft I was flying earlier today in the northern part of the Wellington harbour entrance area.

Finally a string of great weather days!

What a fantastic change for the good with the weather in the last few days! Last evening [Saturday evening, NZ time] I was out with some of my church friends and amongst everything else, I snapped a few photos of the local scenery.

The following three photos show just how awesome the day was [and today was just as good!]. Don't worry Silke, I won't publish that photo :-)

Top to bottom are:

Looking north - the main portion of the first photo is the Miramar peninsula. Visible near the top left is the inner harbour, near the top right is the southern end of the Hutt Valley. Bottom left is a golf course. Enjoy!

The second photo is in the evening looking west towards the South Island. The last photo is a picturesque Lyall Bay at night! Awesome!

A beautiful day in Wellington! Now for the fog...!?

It has been a fantastic day in Wellington weather-wise with the bright yellow orb in the sky :-) present most of the day. It's been a welcome change, even though I was stuck inside most of the day :-)

Being Wellington, it couldn't be that simple. This evening I noticed that below the bright blue sky there was a layer of cloud [!] creeping in. A quick trip to a vantage point showed fog to the south of the city, creeping up over the south of the city, particularly just over the airport. I also heard what sounded like a ship's fog horn sounding several times.

Turns out that it was some warm, moist, air from the north colliding with some cooler air to the south, and, voila, fog.

Still a really nice day, and my camera is getting some practice in the sunshine :-)! Here are a few of the pictures.

How nice is this place?

It appears that the only way to get sunshine is to leave Wellington, which is exactly what I did yesterday. Most of the photos are on my other blog (http://www.flying.geek.nz/) because it was a"flying visit", but here is a nice scenic shot of part of the Wairau Valley, west of Blenheim.

Who wouldn't want to live here?

A Wellington summer

It is summer here in Wellington, but in recent weeks, the weather has been a real shocker. Yesterday was strong winds, rain and cold. Today was warmer, much less rain, and the wind was not an issue. Still there was very little sun to be seen.

The following pictures are the scenic views :-) from my home this evening... the visibility only looks to be getting worse. Before anyone reminds me of the freezing temperatures and snow in much of Europe, North America and other places... At least you are in winter!

A fine evening in Wellington

Another fine evening in Wellington... after all the wind we've had it's been great to have a couple of still, warm evenings :-)

Merry Christmas my friends!

It's Christmas eve here in New Zealand, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to say "Merry Christmas" and "Happy New Year" from this side of the world. I hope you have a safe and enjoyable time as we celebrate another Christmas season.

A couple of pictures - sunset and my rather dodgy looking excuse for a Christmas Tree :-)

Enjoy!

Te Kopahou Reserve across to the South Island

Here are two pictures that I took 2 evenings ago from Te Kopahou Reserve, looking across to the South Island. If I had been [literally!] 5 minutes earlier, I would have got a much better shot of the setting run, but what I did get looks OK.

I like the combination of a red, clear, sky, and the fog sitting on the water in the distance.

The second image is zoomed in on an Interislander Ferry making the crossing to Picton.

Evans Bay scenary

I popped down to Evans Bay in Wellington on Saturday. The main reason was trying to photograph some aerobatics being performed [that didn't work out], but I did get a nice photo of Evans Bay looking north. On the left side of the photo is part of Mount Victoria, on the right is the northern end of the Miramar Peninsula.

As you can see it was another stunning Wellington day weather-wise!

Other photos are a seagull that was hanging around [perhaps creation's perfect scavenger?? :-)], and finally a photo taken that evening at home looking south. I was most interested in the cloud formation which had been visible for around half the day.
